The History of The Mantel Shoppe
Although The Mantel Shoppe didn’t officially adopt its name until 1990, its roots trace back to 1988 when Ronald Leopard established the business in Springville, Alabama. Initially, he crafted fireplace mantels in a spare room of his home, primarily for friends. The demand quickly grew, prompting a move to his garage, where he continued to produce mantels for a couple of years.
As popularity surged, The Mantel Shoppe was compelled to expand into a full wood shop to keep up with the increasing orders. Even in the cramped space, the team managed to produce an impressive average of 400 fireplace mantels per month. However, when production hit 600 mantels per month, it became evident that further expansion was necessary. This led to the current shop, which is four times larger than the previous facility and about 40 times the size of the original room where Ronald crafted his very first mantel.
The Mantel Shoppe has been fortunate to have a dedicated team, including industry veterans such as Billy Johnson, Nick Leopard, Chad Thrasher, and Ben Saint, each bringing over 20 years (some 30+ but who's counting) of experience to the table. Their expertise has been instrumental in maintaining the quality and craftsmanship that our customers have come to rely on.
